India’s biggest media
awards will be announced today and presented in New Delhi at a function
presided over by President A P J Abdul Kalam. These Awards started last
year by the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards with an aim
to recognise and reward the best in journalism in India. You can look
forward for the winners appearing on
kidsfreesouls Journalism pages tomorrow for the Hall of Fame
winners. What draws my attention is, they will announce an award for a
non fiction book and sports journalism. Also, noteworthy will be an
award for best HIV/Aids reporting column.
I guess this is a
formality! Awards mean appreciations, but most of all, comes the
satisfaction of a work well done. And when we talk of Journalism, I
guess the scenario is fast changing on the web with Online Journalism
quickly setting it's pace with newer technology every day. It is too
difficult to give an award online!
Well, today is the
RathYatra and this means, a lot of Hindu faith. Here's a sacred
scripture which says:
Shloka:
Atmanam rathinam viddhi shareeram rathameva tu,
Buddhim tu sarathim viddhi manaha pragrahameva tu.
Indriyani hayanyahur vishayansteshu gocharan,
(Translation):
The atman is Rathi - owner of the `chariot' - the body,
The intellect is the Sarathi - driver,
The mind is the rein,
The senses are the horses, and
The Panch Vishayas - material objects of the five senses - are
the fields of pasture for the horses.
i.e. The person whose Sarathi -
intellect - is wise, whose mind fully controls the senses, can traverse Samsara to reach
the desired goal - the Lord's abode.
You can
read more details on Krishna, Balaram and Shubadra here on

Keep the faith, whichever religion - God
is one!
Here's the new Google
Search (Above) and Google Calendar - Though,
yet to make some changes, do explore!
As the Harry Potter
works box office magic, find all the Harry Potter in Google Search
above. The Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is whipping up
$44.8 million for the biggest ever with J K Rowling who prove an
International sensation.
The Bookstores in my
town has announced a pre-ordering of the latest book Harry Potter and
the Deathly H and it remains to be seen how many books are sold. Rather,
how many kids are reading the Book - in real sense! Hmmm...now, as an
Author, I have a long way to go even to sell some
copies of my books! Marketing gimmicks do play a major role.
Well, Here is Kidsfreesouls In Association to Amazon -
The kidsfreesouls Store to explore with books for kids and Harry
Potter DVDs too.
Find the Taj Mahal in
Google Maps - It's one of the Wonders of the World! Btw, have you
used Google Apps in Education? Google technologies development support
education and action on the range of global and local issues affecting
our world. Educational Institutes have found to be using Google Apps
especially making the use of: Gmail,
Google Talk and
Google Calendar. In
addition, you can use the Apps like Docs & Spreadsheets and a
Personal
Start Page.
Offering Google solutions to students is really just the tip of the
iceberg for where you go with innovative technology.
Google has recently
purchased Postini which offers services such as message security,
archiving, encryption and policy enforcement and has about 10 million
users at some 35,000 companies.
Well, if you are in
India, your place for download to Google Pack is a limited version.
Nevertheless, enjoy!
Born on 12th July, (100
BC or 102). He was considered as one of the best orator and Author of
prose in Rome. As such, we all have learnt Literature in schools and
Shakespeare always use to be the supplementary studies with Julius
Caesar and Cleopatra - Remember the movie, Cleopatra?
Well, Julius Caesar was
always said to be Indecisive, inflexible, weak and tyrant by nature. The
Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Burton and Rex Harrison Movie - Cleopatra
movie reflected many of Caesar's traits.
You can find Quotes in
search with the keywords 'Julius Caesar' in Quotes
page here. There is no profile of Julius Caesar in
Kidsfreesouls Literature page but
Here
is a teaching Guide with student activities on Julius Caesar. Though
for the higher grades, this surely gives an insight to follow up the
lessons with the class.
As I surf the web
for Resources, I find beautiful websites - exclusively coming out with a
newer redesigned technology. Kaboose,
the kids domain, scholastic and
the Kids Aol are great
websites which I suppose is a team work and commercial too. Anyways,
these three are my fav' on net right now! Explore and you are sure to
find some Interesting links. However, the links open up in newer
websites so if kids are surfing, do make a note to surf with a parent or
a teacher so as not to get lost.
Btw, here is an
interesting website I just came across. Maggie's Earth Adventures
has free Lesson Plans and free classroom ready activities. Their free
weekly Activity packets will be emailed somewhere in August, so be sure
to register your mail id there.
Just a minute ago, the
New York Times news on my desk refers to a news piece on a website which
has 600,000 registered users, age 14 and older. Parents and child safety
experts are concerned about the online activities of teenagers which
have been particularly nervous about the video chats and services the
website allows.
Here's the NYT Tech news. Check in for the
latest NYT Kids news here.
I read somewhere
in a newsletter of
Net Family news
that over 90% of students attend the 110,000 public schools throughout
the United States from kindergarten through 12th grade. These schools
combined spend about $6.2 billion a year on technology needs, including
hardware, software, networking equipment and staff development. Of that,
about $500 million was spent on wireless technologies in recent years.
Connections are made easier for students to have advantage in education.
The procedural and instructional activities are made easier. An article
here may interest some of the teachers.
Well, many schools here
with exceptions, are a long way to yet adopt the technology even to get
students connected to net. Some schools come out with In-house news mag
and my ex-students report having copied
kidsfreesouls content too. Children do have the projects which are
helped by parents and tuition teachers who sort for Internet search. As
such, those who do not understand the tech, end up with social
networking spaces with a herd mentality "My friend is in orkut, so I
want to log in there (or the myspace, etc). Just the fun sort of places
without actually knowing the cyber bullying and consequences there goes
by with interacting. We all need to beware - why leave the kids
un-attended?
Anyways, here is
a Byte Crime Booklet "Mind
what you do Online". You can even download the
Tip Sheets. What every child on net needs to know is "You are Watched".
And with Google Accounts and it's search features, even what you
searched is stored in Web
History. So, watch out there - whether you are
a parent, teacher or a kid - follow the simple ethics of being "Good"
and there, guardian angel watches you with loving care.
The Seven Wonders
of the World are announced with the Taj Mahal from India. Check on the
slide-show below and
news
piece on the news page.
Btw, Kids
computing is no safe and hence, monitored activities are always encouraged.
Though technology education is on a rise, kids in the age group of 9-15 are
almost surfing the sites that call for Internet monitoring. They are in for
emailing friends and sending the e cards and forwards. Such activities do call
for guidance and complete monitoring as tender minds are easier to quiver. It is
also lately noted that
kids
swap music via phones. The new iphone has all the features that tempt even
grown ups. As such, net privacy rules are almost being broken with the Internet
ad scenario changing faster as ever. As such, Is Computing safe for kids? My
article from Guardian of Angels, says a lot. Well, here's a
video by Jackie Halaw on 3 steps for 21st Century
Learning. Tips for a Transformable changes in Technology Education. Enjoy and
adopt her cool steps.
School kids are
all towards the learning process with a lot of homework hassles to cope up as
teachers are on their way teaching the lessons here. On talking to some of the
children, I find the back-benchers are the ones who are not prompt in reply to
raise their hand when their teacher ask a question or two in the classroom.
A
recent survey in the UK suggest that Teachers who encourage students to
raise their hands to answer a question in a class, Risk leaving quiet Children
behind. Instead of a hands-up in the classroom, teachers can opt in to give
thirty seconds of 'thinking process' before the answer. They can even discuss
the question in pairs before answering. Some children do not mind being
neglected and who are not keen to be attentive. These are the invisible
back-benchers who avoid teacher's gaze and are in their own comfort levels. It
is here to encourage every child to speak the answers and build their confidence
instead of applauding the child who knows all. Most of the time, there are four
to five kids who interact with the teacher. These are the outspoken lot and
teachers almost ignore the introverts though these children may even perform
better academically. Group talks, chit-chats on topics and interacting with all
the children, a teacher boost confidence and build a rapport. This confidence
building techniques help each child to speak up and the interactive Q & A
session becomes a fun learning process.
Well, I guess
children perform best when they have to work in groups.
It's ever the team spirit that excel. The weaker ones who are slow learners are
encouraged to speak and helped out in every way so that they do not lag behind
than fast learners. While they try to respond, children can always be prompted
in a loving way for replies by providing a word or two - their fear is gone and
so do they build their confidence too.
Say a Chocoholic 'Hi' to your
friends, near and dear ones. Yeah, it's ever the ever loving Chocolate day on
7th July.
Chocolate is one of the life's great pleasures. It's
rich consistency and distinctive flavor appeal to everyone's sweet tooth. It is
a prime source of instant energy as it is full of carbohydrates and contains
traces of the stimulants caffeine and theobromine.
Chocolate was first brought to the western world some 400 years ago, when Spanish
explorers came across it in South America. At first it was used only as a drink, but in
the 19th century, the familiar chocolate bar was invented in Switzerland and quickly
became the world's most popular confection. The tree that yields chocolate is aptly named
Theobroma, which means food of the gods. The tree has been cultivated for so many
centuries that there are probably no wild trees left. It is from the pale purple-pink
beans within the pulp of the hanging fruit that chocolate is made.

National Ice-cream
month was designated by Ronald Reagan in 1984 in US. He also appointed the third
Sunday in July as National Ice-cream Day. As 90% population consumed Ice-cream
in US, Regan made these events observe with appropriate ceremonies and
activities. International Ice -cream Association encourage retailers and
consumers to celebrate July as National Ice Cream Month and day. They provide
thousands of jobs for US citizens and generates annually in sales approx.20
billion dollars plus. Every year more percentage of milk produced by dairy
farmers is used to produce Ice-cream.
Here is a
brief
History of Ice-cream and I am sure, all love to scream for Ice-creams!
How Stuff
Works has great info on Ice-cream
here. We
also have Kulfi too which is very popular and sold by vendors and in carts.
Though Kulfi is not an Ice-cream, it is very much near to it. You can find more
details here on

4th July
and once again, US celebrates Independence Day.
Here is the info on US Independence Day and the current Events to be
held in US to mark the celebrations.
Ever and
always, we find the politicians giving their speech. However, what we
fail to understand that these are the leaders who govern the country who
knowingly or unknowingly spread a message of hate, prejudice, corruption, fear -
Ask any common citizen and they want PEACE. The
word Peace has become so common that we find all newspapers, television,
web - showing incidents that harness Peace. We even have
Peace Lessons for kids! Where there is War
and war talks, what do we expect the children to learn? These children
are the silent observers! It is the duty of every parent or teacher to
instill the love and faith for the country and guide them to be good
citizens. The Inspirational Role Model or a Hero cannot be a
Politician!
Btw,
Keep your eyes

Presidents of US | US National Anthem | History - What
Flag means
As we
power our modern lives, Global warming is on a high alert all over the
world. Glacier's are melting, sea levels are
rising and this is what I mentioned in an article in
Freesouls Print media in 1998. The
green house gases are higher than earlier - the Green house effect is
the warming that happens when certain gases in the Earth's atmosphere
traps heat. The rapid rise in the Greenhouse gases is a problem as it
changes climate faster posing unique challenges to life. The hole in
the ozone layer is all playing it's big role. Even humans are more
responsible for the imbalance that occur rapidly.

Many
times while children get to write composition (Essays) in the
classroom, it is a real mess with the beginnings and ending part. As
teachers, I feel, the kids need to be crafted for writing with helpful
tips and later, get to writing the composition.
It is
hard for kids to grip that pencil and pen words on the page. First, is
the need of building a strong vocabulary base - whichever the grade they
are in. Second is Loud Reading and by this, I mean real loud so that
they can hear their own voice. Third is, reading phonetically. Finally,
think over and write down the summary of what they read. Apart from
this, let them learn the quotes and beginning phrases, sorted from
books. Let the kids discuss, plot stories - write dialogues and why,
these can be beginnings too like the Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope
begins, "I wonder when in the world you're going to do anything,
Rudolf?." Three things are most important to remember are 'Head, body
copy and the ending part' - The heading with a quote or a phrase, a
dialogue or the trailing incident - coming to the description to the
body copy stuffed with the topic's central writing and the end which
makes it fade away with conclusion. Like an introduction arousing the
interest, the conclusion should satisfy it. No abrupt ends but
strikingly express the main topic you drive home. About the style in
writing, I can say, "The secret of clear writing is clear thinking." So,
let the kids be perfectly clear before they start writing.
Ugh, oh.
This reminds me, once I wrote an Essay for my son when he was sick and
had a submission in eighth grade. The topic was 'Adolescence age' - I
helped him to copy the same from one of my print article and the teacher
gave him 2 marks out of 10! I really failed to understand why my writing
deserved only 2 marks? So, talked to her and she confessed, "I have 60
students in my classroom and it was not possible for me to read. Maybe,
that's an error" - Well, teachers need not overburden their work and
discourage a child who cannot write - rather motivate and encourage.
Isn't it?
Mildred J.
Hill composed the Happy Birthday Melody and the fact remains, this is
the most popular song in English which was written by Patty Hill and
Mildred J. Hill in 1893 when they were school teachers in Louisville,
Kentucky. Originally, "Good Morning to all' - a variation later followed
too. Born on June 27, 1859, Mildred learnt music from her father,
Calvin Cody. A kindergarten and Sunday school teacher, she loved
children and made learning more fun. Children feel free with music and
this is what the sisters knew too well.
Well,
here's a piece of news
on the Internet
Radio. Music is ever so good to hear and we can listen to Internet
radio almost everywhere on the web now. I am fond of
Yahoo Launchcast and it is so great to listen as you work.
Here are some songs for children and a
recommendation of a Harry Belafonte song "Jamaican Farewell". Teach the
lyrics to kids and they enjoy singing this song.
Ever
been to Flixter? I always avoided social networking places once I had my
visits to orkut and my space. I turn away the requests of Face book or
Friendster. Somehow, I landed up recently to
Flixter
and it is a place that sparkle your eyes with the Hollywood movies and
stars to add to fav and rate them. Also enter to quizzes and answer too.
You can write a piece of
news on Flixter if you are into Gossiping on those movie artists -
what they do, eat, drink or how Paris Hilton felt while she was in Jail!
Not
quite a place for kids except for just for a change - yeah, an idea can
do float in to make the kids creative and be interested. Monitored
activities do help on web to motivate learning. In my class, I've seen
children playing a game called "Bollywood" - they write a jumble of a
movie name and you got to guess the name right. Also fill in the
alphabets in fill-in-blanks that fit in the movie name. Flixter
can serve the purpose on the web. Kids can write in their Hollywood Quiz
and find some quizzes on Flixter too; share the fun with friends. In
doing this activity for a change in a while, as we allow, we get back
the results in real time educational activities as lighter minds work
well with reading, writing book reviews or doing grammar lessons. Try
this for a change 'A do-it-together' and maybe, kids may give great
results when you tell them to finish grammar exercises.
Nancy Drew
Btw,
here's the new Nancy Drew Movie on Flixter. Enjoy!
Helen Keller
(Adams) was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama on 27th June 1880 - An American
author and lecturer, who, having overcome considerable physical
handicaps, she served as an inspiration for other afflicted people. When
19 months old, she was stricken with a severe illness that left her deaf
and blind. No way could be found to educate her until her seventh year,
when she began her special education in reading and writing with Anne
Mansfield Sullivan, later Macy, of the Perkins Institute for the Blind.
She quickly learned to read by the Braille system and to write by means
of a specially constructed typewriter. She later became a Lecturer and
an Author. Her writings include The Story of My Life (1903), The
World I Live In (1908), Out of the Dark (1913), Midstream-My Later Life
(1930), Let Us Have Faith (1940), Teacher: Anne Sullivan Macy (1955),
and The Open Door (1957). Her life is the subject of a film, The
Unconquered (1954) and a play, The Miracle Worker (1960; made into an
award-winning film in 1962), by the American author William Gibson.
It might
be a surprise but Hellen Keller's Life has also been a subject of an
Indian Film
"Black" with a little bit of difference. This movie got many awards.
What makes me write on Hellen Keller is a memory to the competition we,
at Swagat, held at the Deaf, Dumb and Blind
School when the deaf and dumb children gleefully participated and the
blind children arranged a show for us. The blind children danced, sang
and played songs and it has been memorable moments for me. It is known
that angry feelings about being blind can hinder Braille learning. It
needs a lot of motivation. Why, even a lot of love, care and motivation
can change normal child's attitude too. Do not Sympathize the blind or
handicapped but stand by and motivate them with love and care.
Movies like
Sound of Music painted a glowing picture of a big family with warmth,
sharing and fun and ready to support playmates. They reflect the belief
that large families encourage resourcefulness, independence and
responsibility while discouraging selfishness and feeling sorry for
oneself.
Not anymore! Some think that a big family can be a buffer against what
they see as the rootless ness and isolation of modern life. As a result,
we see many parents staying alone with their kids. Children have almost
become loners. As such, parents are over-scheduling their children with
many activities apart from school lessons. The outdoor games are
almost missed as parents do not allow the children to play after school
hours as they are busy with the home-work lessons. As such, children
take time out to be mini adults, watching television, playing video
games or computing on their laptops or fiddle with cell phones. The
parents mostly get them to activities like dancing, singing, math
learning, drawing and coloring. Sports like Tennis, skating or Badminton
is almost for a short term class. Kids at home should have a balance
schedule of both, work and play.
Outdoor games are equally important as they mix up with other
children, learn to share, fight and survive, resolve differences and
even feel fresh as they are physically exercising while playing
outdoors.
Here are some games you may find interesting! Playing is recreation.
Let the kids ENJOY!
Are you a
good Conversationalist? Well, I am not! Particularly, when I have to
speak in a group of friends who are typically gujarati - I mean,
complete housewives who blah blah over home and children.
I find
many parents flaunting their views on kids who are grabbing high grades.
In fact, these kids are found to be failing in words while at a
conversation or they have handwriting flaws or the like. Well,
here's
seven ways that can help the child or an adult to be a good conversationalist.
Btw, I
conduct a Vocabulary class and an Idiom Class quite on and often.
Children miss learning the Idiom Fun while they busy engage in
worksheets and Grammar fun. Every day,
Idioms bring color to speech. Watch for my Idioms list in Worksheets
space - soon to be added.
Scholastic
Dictionary of Idioms is quite an essential resource, featuring
explanations for more than 700 everyday idioms along with sample
sentences. I even recommend a book for reference on 'Slang' words by
Pamela Munro - sure to stoke up those who are passing through ivy
covered halls of knowledge and sure to mystify alumni and lovers of
English. This is the Official Directory of College slang compilation.
Sometimes,
it is good to know Slang esp. if you are hip hop listener or a college
goer student and don't want to end up 'brain-dead' (stupid!). Enjoy!
World
Typewriter Day! And I really missed this in spite of being a Steno!
Yeah, a no good in maths, I found my way to get a Diploma in Secretarial
course which made me learn Typing and Shorthand. My speed rated the best
with 130/100 words per minute! I then had a portable Godrej typewriter
and later got me an electronic typewriter too! I used High speed in
Typewriting by Kennedy & Jarret by Pitman Now with computer, typing on
keyboard is just easier as ever and there is no look back to those old
fashioned Typewriters anymore!
Well, I
guess while we call those typewriters out of fashion, those very
typewriters were used for typing practices and we had to appear for
typing exams to grab all those lovely marks even while we cleared our
Board Exams. With computers as in-tech picks, kids do not learn the
typing basics and I noticed, with two finger typing, many of them trail
to pick the words as they focus more on the keyboard to find the
alphabet. As an Expert in Typing and Shorthand, I suggest every kid
should first get into typing practice before they embark on computer
typing. The basics has to be learnt. Every teacher or a parent should
first take a class on proper finger placing on the keyboard keys with
alphabet practice and later, the sentences - typing out speedily with
word counts. Fingering, wrists and touch - all three are very important
while typing.
I have a
page of Riddles-Tongue Twisters here with
'Betty bough some butter...' which is one of the tongue twister that
goes with two hand typing. However, I will be adding more of typing
practice basics here on this page with sentences which have the use of
both the hands (fingers). Typing with two fingers of both hands is too
irritating and I make sure my children do not adopt this method of
typing. The same perfect finger placing on keys applies in learning
Piano keyboard lessons too. If the child has to look at the keys while
playing keyboard synthesizers or piano, how will the child look at the
audience while playing?
Here is a one minute speed practice - check that out - how fast you can
type on your computer keyboard:-) It is assumed that the operator
possesses the ability to type accurately in one minute a minimum of 60
words - 300 strokes.
"Once upon
a time, through a strange country, there rode some goodly knights, and
their path lay by a deep wood, where tangled briars grew very thick and
tore the flesh of those, that lost their way. The leaves of the trees
that grew in the wood were very dark and thick, so that no ray of light
could filter through the branches." (330 strokes: 66 words)
"There is
joy in speeding along the lines of the printed page. In the hands of the
well-trained typist, the machine hums along with perfect rhythm, but
there are spots in the road where care must be exercised - there are
punctuation ruts and capitals and quotations strewn along the road. Even
speed traps are encountered, with fines for excessive speed." (360
strokes:72 words)
Practice
makes a man perfect, isn't it? Keep the Faith!
June 21 is set for World Music Day. A new style statement is Music on
Mobiles! Plenty of evidence confirms the growing trend of increased
preferences of listening music over the mobile phones. Surveys reveal,
majority of cellphone users now buy handsets integrated with FM Radio
and MP3 Players. Music on the move has become the choice and as World
Space in car or ipod is yet not a major choice, mobile handsets are the
most ringing in revenue for mobile companies along with content
providers, mobile operators, record lable companies and the artists. The
mobile music seems to over power as this is an increasingly popular way
to listen to music.
well, as
we speak of mobiles, here is a concern for kids using mobiles. Mobile
bullying is on a rise all over the world. According to a research of by
NCH and Tesco Mobile, one in five young people have been bullied or
threatened by mobile phone or computer (through text messages, emails,
photos, etc). However, 56% parents aren't worried over this except a few
teachers are aware of the problems. In UK, 51% teachers reported of
Mobile text bullying and 67% teachers reported on such issues with their
primary level students. Here is the site by NCH and you can download the
10 tips
Stop Text Bully Poster from here and clip it on your School Board. I
have taken a special class on this as Indian Mobile scenario is fast
changing and we have the best mobiles available here.
Being the
World Music Day, You can find here the best music download sites &

A child had been reading The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood by Howard
Pyle. It had been a slow but steady reading process with writing the
summary after every 30-40 pages with the 240 pages paperback. Finally,
after she finished reading and writing the summary of all 240 pages, she
shortened the summary and wrote a precise review of the book. The book
has illustrated pics which she scanned and added to her Book Review
project.
This
almost took her six sessions with two hours devotion. She even read
other small books and got into writing activities other than this for a
change instead of continuously reading Robin Hood as she found it quite
stressfully boring after reading 30 pages and writing the summary.
However, when her Project of Review writing of Robin Hood was complete,
she had a sense of pride and satisfaction. As such, her interest for
reading more Classics is ignited and her next pick is Little Women by
Louisa May Alcott followed by many more reads like Prince and the
Pauper, Around the World in 80 days, The Prisoner of Zenda, A
Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, etc.
Children
can be encouraged to write small reviews after they finish reading a
book. A simple jot down in the scrap like:
Name of the Book
Author's Name
Characters in the Book
Best Part I like
Hard Words in the Book,
My Opinion and lastly, Sign of the Student and Teacher's sign.
Once a week, one review writing and you have 52 reviews ready in a year.
Even if the child skips writing, at least there will be 25 book reviews
written - five may be beginning efforts but the remaining will be
written properly with a little bit of help from the parent or teacher.
Reading also improves, so do narrating the story and finally, writing -
handwriting improves and also the language while they write the review.
If the student is not willing to write the review, there should be an
option to write a letter to a friend telling about the story. I adopt
these teaching method in my classroom and by
the end of the year, I do get great results. Why - Try this method for a
year and I am sure, you will find good results too. You can submit your
child's review here and for 25 Book reviews sent, you get
Swagat
Certificate too.
All my readers in Surat who frequently ring me for class info and other
