DIVE INTO THE OCEAN OF KNOWLEDGE!

Rabindranath Tagore says:

"We rob the child of his earth to teach him
Geography of Language,
To teach him Grammar
His hunger is for epic but he is supplied
with chronicles of facts and dates
He was born in a human world but banished into a world of living gramophones to live for the
original sin of being born in ignorance"

More Junk and that's getting to be more obese! More fruits and vegetables and that's the way to live healthy! - How often parents and teachers tell the children yet the daily diet consist of the Pizza, Burger and all sorts of canned food and desserts. Schools cutting Fats in Food is always found welcoming and classroom activities to enhance children, the importance of fruit and vegetables have found to be useful. Parents and teachers need to act as role models as they demonstrate healthy eating habits. Schools can have 'Fruit only tuck shops and integrate fruit and vegetables into a children's culture in a positive way.

20th October is know for US National Fruit Day - also when fruit is dipped in Brandy and served! (Refer Calendar on News Page)

Research finds that Children's consumption of Fruit is too low. One in ten eat No Fruit with children below six years. In Swagat, my findings reveal - hardly one child eats Fruit per week out of average 25 kids! The evenings are almost with Pizza and Sandwiches! There has been a rise in obesity in last many years and a considerable decline in spending more time for outdoor games. A diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables can help in tackling obesity. With pollution, asthma and wheezing is on rise all over the world and here comes in fruits and vegetables with all the Vitamin C to reduce the symptoms in children as well as adults. In 1991 WHO recommended that people should eat 400 gm (five portions) of fruits and vegetables everyday to reduce risk of cancer. Since than, fruits and vegetables are on top priorities. Well, here's Enchanted Learning with craft for kids - a 3D fruit Craft.

(Find more Stickers here for your Projects)

Btw, 20th October night begins the Dussera Festival here with people eating fafda-jalebi - The National Fruit day is not at all celebrated here and I guess no thought is even given for fixing such Fruit Day. Parents and Teachers too have text book lessons to promote and healthy eating habits in most houses is the food - call it just food - be it, Gujarati, Italian, chinese, Continental, whatever. It's time to rise and shine esp. in my town which has become a heaven place for Food and Fast food! Here's a video on obesity - a Canadian Message which says a lot! Enjoy!

Boss's Day and it's ever the 16th October to get into good books of your Boss. But, how do you cope up Managing your Boss?

Well, a lot depends on 'Attitudes' and these Bosses are ones who rules. It's best to know the Secret of Success - what you really want and get the best out of it - or just chill!

A survey conducted for Deloitte & Touche, US revealed that job dissatisfaction was a leading reason people make unethical decisions at work. The survey 'Ethics and Workplace' further says,91% believe that workers who enjoy good work life balance are more likely to behave ethically. Here's the survey results that might be too useful to Management.

I think that the behavior of the leaders in the organizations; the managers, supervisors, Educator Heads or as in a newspaper, the main Editors and sub editors are more responsible to be the most significant factors in encouraging or discouraging good behavior at work. What they do matters, what they do perform, makes a big difference too. They are in some way observed, used as role models too, whether they know or not. Being straightforward, honest and treating all employees equally is a good example of management. Taking credits for someone else's accomplishment, lying to impress or even lowering down the employee is the weak point of the leader manager who do not know how to balance job satisfaction levels. Ultimately, the employee may try to be in books by pleasing the manager for some time but when the self respect or the ego hurts, the job dissatisfaction arise. Competition among employees are nevertheless charted programs for motivation and building team spirits but if management fails at levels of its own understanding, unethical acts arise out of bad behavior patterns of their superiors. After all, most of the Bosses are found to be "Too Ambitious" and will go to extreme points in many cases. Ultimately, a dissatisfied employee will face the grudge unless he becomes a leader.

I recommend a book for all those dissatisfied employees on "How to manage your Boss" . Bosses miss out the time factor in knowing the individual strengths of the employee and here is the book that guides to follow the path to show the boss how capable you are. The boss is a human mind with full of power and pressures which lead way to make him to be a politician too in his own field. The time now is of Generation Y who have innovative ideas of corporate responsibility and work performance.  Business leaders who want an authentic edge in recruiting this generation of workers must learn to listen to them in a fundamentally different way. Be it, Corporate or Education or any Management level, Generation Y is the future!

The Scrabble - All a game of fun and learn. I remember the word trivia games we played at the Talkcity chatrooms and still the game is great going all the time pick. Scrabble was introduced in 1948. These days it is produced in 27 languages, according to Mattel Inc., which owns the non-American rights to the game. Scrabble ranks # on Top 10 games in Kidsfreesouls List of games. Rest follows Monopoly, cake mania and all leading to X Box games like the recent Halo 3 - The Master Chief who makes it Big.

Teaching Board games to kids is just challenging and fun learning. The spelling rules as well as building a vocabulary is all in process as kids engage to a word building play activity. With Hangman and other spelling activities, encouraging a child is quick and easier while sparing a few moments for play. With a scrabble, an age appropriate spell fun works best as you begin to play with the letters, keeping in mind, the vowels and consonants which are verbally formed. Kids can have a Family Game Night, ready with the word list so as to be easy with the game. When I play the game of scrabble or rather allow the class kids to engage into a Scrabble game activity, the first thing I noticed is the enthusiasm as they can make their own words. Of course, we do have cheaters who spell wrong and yet, make it appear correct. This is when we find children disappointed and embarrassed when we can emphasize on what it is to learn or what means 'winning'.

Well, for the online free plays, here's Mattelscrabble and AOL games for the game lovers. And here's on Honing Sports Spirit - an article in my book - Grab a copy NOW for the read. Btw, here's recent Worksheets of Wordsearch added to the Wordsearch index and Ctrl+Print for classrooms. Enjoy!

Parents Guide to Social Networking and we end up with a list of guides to protect kids to safe surf on the web. Most of the kids in India are found to be on Orkut, Facebook or Hi5 with the knowledge of Parents irrespective of what scraps they send. Parents often feel the pride that their children are on computers and the schools have even called for the laptops to be compulsory.

Social networkings can be potentially damaging and too harmful if proper guidelines are not adhered. What every parent or a teacher need to follow is the privacy policy, Net Etiquettes and chat etiquettes too. Do not stop them to surf these sites but instead be friendly. Converse with them, Install softwares and place the kid friendly sites for them to surf, encourage your kid to share profile with you. It may so happen that the child might have multiple accounts too. And mostly, share the experiences and joys of surfing. Here are some good tips on Google News Section on Kidsfreesouls News Zone.

All Social Networkings are not harmful but it is upto ownself to follow the self discipline. The Google features are hence, the best used in classrooms and every parent or a teacher need to adopt to Google Tools - why, you can even make a page on Google for Online Homework Assignments or share your links too. Here is a created Google Page of Kidsfreesouls. Enjoy!

We all know, President Bush has proclaimed on Dec 18, 2001,  September 11 as "Patriot Day."

Here, on the
State Gov website, his speech says, "On this first observance of Patriot Day, we remember and honor those who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. We will not forget the events of that terrible morning nor will we forget how Americans responded in New York City, at the Pentagon, and in the skies over Pennsylvania -- with heroism and selflessness; with compassion and courage; and with prayer and hope.....(Read More).

Kidsfreesouls tribute to all the departed souls. A gloomy sadness fills our hearts with the memories of the departed souls - Be it any calamity and it's human loss that fills our hearts with emotions.

Children are always the silent observers. They respond faster to the influences around them. We need to build the Pillars of Character right from the start. Stop the kids from being criminals has all tips on this here. A Peace Song and a Peace lesson too.

As Marie Chapian said ‘Stay Happy in an unhappy World’, all you need to do is beat the blues, the blahs, the burnouts and other emotional hurts to achieve Happiness. Faith is a lamp that dispels ignorance….Faith is the hope that keeps you surfing on the waves of a sea of storms…Faith, a trust in tomorrow and dreaming God’s dream of a beautiful world, leads you from darkness to light and than there is Faith – Faith in the super power called ‘God’, a vision of unknown strength that lays down rules that restrict us to do the wrong!

Hindus celebrate Lord Krishna Birth festival on 4th September. Krishna "Literally means Black" is the eighth incartion of Vishnu, born to Devaki and brought up by Yashoda. The purpose of his incarnation was to destroy his evil uncle Kansa who had taken the throne of Mathura. Krishna played a crucial role in Mahabharata and fully revealed his divinity to Arjuna, the son of Indra. Here's the Krishna Pages on Kidsfreesouls. Click for the Gita Review too!

A member of the GFK Group, Germany, Mediamark Research Inc. came with results showing Kids fond of Maths more than Reading and Writing. It interviewed 5300 Children asking them about their Favorite subject.

As a favorite subject, 25.4% in the age group 6-11 years chose Maths with more boys likely for the pick. Art is a close second, with 22.7 percent of children naming it as their favorite subject; reading is a distant third, with only 12.4 percent selecting it; and writing/English is the top subject among only 4.2 percent of children.  Here's the detailed pdf.

Be it American Kids survey or Indian, Age is a factor in child's attitude and so do the Gender role makes the choice. I understand there is a lot peer competition that makes parents choice for children activities too. A herd mentality when one joins a Math class means the other go for the same. Parents and teachers need to provide resources what children need. However, for lessons, a work atmosphere can be set up to achieve instructional goals and collaborate to accomplish tasks. Sometimes, schools set high expectations for learning. Moreover, some projects require to make the kids go online and engage into school activities. As such, kids are stuffed with too much of learning and they end up messing up their own imaginative creativity.

Favorite School Subject Among Children 6-11

Virtual World has also been luring the children to Social Networking sites and more sites developing like the Club Penguin, Be-Bratz, Habbo Hotel, and Whyville. Online fantasy has both the potential of being beneficial and harmful! So, watch there when you pick a choice for a Math, Reading, Art, Music or Internet for kids!

I came across great resources on web lately. However, the category of my search in Google varies as it ends up to not only educational websites but on major search for Newspapers sites and Web designs/Blog Designs & more. If you are making Blogs, here's a soon to come Blog Designs, Word Press Blog Design Community. You can read more details on Brian Gardner's Website.

Till I work on making a Kidsfreesouls Resource page, Here's my Press Page I done last week.

And, here's some sites I came across earlier and find it great resource for educators and parents. Grade Book is a "One Stop Education Reference Website" - a very Useful Resource for Parents, Teachers and Children. Kidsfreesouls is listed in the Primary Section and since more than a year, the students has been using the News in Classroom! What is so inspiring about the website is, loads of Informative links provide unique resource online which can be bookmarked for ready reference. The Education Reference Center has all the links with Educational topics which I am sure might interest many teachers and parents.

Btw, Raksha Bandhan - a festival on Brother-sister relations will be celebrated on 28th August in India. This is a festival when all sisters tie a Rakhi to their Brothers and more, even has the religious sentiments that follow behind the rituals. You can read more on the Rakhi Page here.

The fruit of silence is Prayer, Fruit of Prayer is Faith,
Fruit of faith is Love, Fruit of Love is Service, Fruit of service is Peace – Mother Teresa

Born on 26th August, Mother Teresa is known to the world for her love, compassion and sacrifice. Angel of Mercy and Mother T were just some of the titles used to describe her.

Here's the Profile of Mother Teresa. Add to the Literature Scrap Book!

Well, Children often ask us Questions on How Stuff Works. We have a couple of "Tell Me Why" Books in our Library. However, we fail to answer many questions on their How, When, Where! Here's How Stuff Works-Kidsfreesouls picks - a Quick Daily Stuff Guide to How Things Work from How Stuff Works. Also find a Once-a-week Video.  It is said, "Knowledge is Power" - So, here you go! Children can make Scrap books and add the information on "How Stuff Works" - Stick Pictures too.

While I made some Widgets and surfed my way to learn more tech skills on the web, here's a site of DK I came across which might be worth a visit.

Especially, when Ms.Rowling is her way to write the Detective Fiction, here's where kids can play Shipwreck Detective - Play the role of professional diver Duncan Cameron on
his epic treature hunt!

Btw, RSS is a huge opportunity for all publishers. You can add my widgets to your Site or Blog with Newsgator widgets or springwidgets or the Feedburners.

Back to School in US but here's children getting ready for the First term exams to be held as the first term syllabus almost completed. Some schools have been conducting Drawing, Recitation, Environment, Dance competitions too. I gather, some school children are using their computers to surf the web to make school mags and even encouraged to write their comments on their school activities.

What concerns most is the Internet Safety and Privacy! When at school, there's homework assignments, talking to classmates, research projects, much more! Net is a scary place if children are not careful! There might be school data and the search may end up giving your name, email id and more to the information seeker. It is best to keep an impersonal email id at a gmail, yahoo or aol which has no details. Being suspicious is better than revealing your info. The email and chat etiquettes tips I wrote in my Book Guardian of Angels in 4th Chapter-New Waves of Technology, might be useful. (You can view the more contents in Guardian of Angels 'Look Inside' Feature at Amazon.) Also, here is a Byte Crime Booklet "Mind what you do Online". You can even download the Tip Sheets. Like I said earlier, What every child on net needs to know is "You are Watched". And with Google Accounts and it's search features, even what you searched is stored in Web History. Here are two sites for safety that might interest you - Online Guard and Web Safety for kids.

So, watch out there - whether you are a parent, teacher or a kid - follow the simple ethics of being "Good" and there, guardian angel watches you with loving care.

Btw, if children do freak on Social Networking sites, Parents need to beware - Be Aware! A recent case of Adnan is a scary example of fake profiles on such social networking sites. Earlier, Pew Internet Org conducted a survey and here is the Project Report stating details on Social Networking Websites and Teens:An Overview. Here is a Podcast, I thought you might be interested to know more on what Pew Senior Research Specialist Mary Madden has to say about it.

Here's what I read - HP Author is spotted writing a Detective Novel. The All time great reads for Young Readers are Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys. Ginny Gordon, Three Investigators, Boxcar Children, Judy Bolton and many more fall in this Young reader Detective category.

You can find the list of Nancy Drew series - Books, movies and Games here at the Wiki. A number of Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys are found in Kidsfreesouls Library Shelf - the whole collection purchased by Swagat ex-students.

Well, here's profile of Sherlock Holmes, the well-known Detective and some Mystery Cases - You Be the Detective. These pages were featured earlier in 'The Telegraph' - Mixed Bag column too.

Well, here's a great suggest of Dr. Jekyll and Hyde which has always been a great supplementary reading in the classroom. It has a well-crafted theme and a plot with investigative work. A Research done by Pamela M Price-Anisman -  Teaching Detective Fiction in Development class might be useful on teaching Detective Fiction. Enjoy!

Rajiv Gandhi once said, "Of every rupee the government spends, 15 paise reaches the common man." He spoke of the taking India to the 21st century and here, the future seems to be 'India Shining.' He gave Indian Diplomacy a new direction.

A Pilot with an accidental political career, Rajiv Gandhi
