The Prince & The Pauper
Review by
ilaxi

Mark Twain classic "The Prince and the Pauper" has ever been so excitedly ever told tale of two look-alike boys; a tale of the rich and the poor. No wonder, this has ever been the best educational pick in the classroom as kids would love to dive into imagination and get the moral of the story. Two different worlds and Tom Canty and Edward Tudor shared the same birth date and same features. Fate brings them and they decide to change clothes for few minutes. This leads to the adventures beyond wildest dreams. He pokes fun at the old upper class in England and showed how wrong it was to judge people by outward appearances. Born in November, the author's other famous Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer were my fav too. A good Pick for all ages.

Harry Potter Books are a gripping fantasy tales not only for the kids but for all who dare to dream and would love to swim into fantasy world! Being a great fan of Enid Blyton, Hardy Boys n Nancy Drew, when I heard of Harry Potter, I was bit uncertain whether kids could adopt to the Style reading of J.K.Rowling books. But the moment I got this set and paced to race to track the fantasy, it dawned to me that these are the magical witty adventure excitement that are make great readers n recites. Harry, Ron n Hermione characters portray courage and positive flow with signs of inner strength. Challenges come their way to face wizards n dangers in fantasy world and they fight their way out for a rosy end. There is humour, the language flow and the right stuff right there for keeping you stick to turn the pages in awe excitement n fun. However, I would recommend educators n parents to make the kids dive into fantasy work lest their imagination run dry. And encourage to write the reviews n send review letters to friends about the tales which would further make them read more Harry potter or Enids. Also this would ensure that the books is really read! So, pick them cool n let this be a Reading experience n pleasure, after all! Great picks!

THE INVOLVED FATHER

Family Tested Solutions for getting Dads to participate more in the Daily Lives of their Children

The Book by Kathryn, Robert & Frank Livingston is a book to be read and experienced together by parents willing to create a partnership in raising their children. The book covers concerns from before the baby's birth through young adulthood. It offers a wealth of anecdotes and practical suggestions to help parents nurture and guide their children while maintaining a balanced parenting relationship. The father is with a tug of war and mother who gets exhausted and frustrated for not getting the proper involvement of the father in family problems related to kids. As a father spends more time with his children, he becomes more competent; as he gains more experience and he feels more confident; as he begins to sincerely enjoy his time with his children. It's more likely that he'll want to continue spending time with them. As parents work towards equilibrium in their households, they experience parenting as teamwork. A father's involvement changes through all the seasons of parenting. From the development stages to education, the role of father is equally important as to a mother. The commitment stands joint efforts to give the best to the children for their better future. Issues of teenage freedom, boredom or career selections stand for a great choice where a parental guidance is most required. A father is a bread earner and so does a working mom strive to get involved as to the needs of the kids. The book is all a practical guide required for parents and especially for Dads to get involved in the day to day affair of making the kids grow up gracefully.

Kid Stress
Rating : stars5.gif (394 bytes)
Most of the parents are in the dark about what causes stress in their kids. Many of them do not know nor do they know how to help them cope with it. Kidstress can help parents and kids survive stress-filled days peacefully.
Dr. Georgia Witkin,  a media personality and best-selling author of two books on adult stress offers a refreshing, prescriptive approach to helping kids manage the increasing stress in their own lives. Many chapters of the book focus on Stress related to family, friendship, school, war and death times. Simple bullet point lists offer techniques to lessen the stress focusing on behavioural changes for a couple of trouble shooting situations. Some children show outward signs of stress and such part of the book gives useful insight on how to balance parental sympathy with a denial approach or refusal to be stage-managed to situations beyond limits. Open conversations and sorting to solutions is derived to stress situations. Identifying the stress symptoms in childrens own words in the book, Dr. Witkin portrays their sensitiveness on how they expose their feelings with words like ‘I get a tight knot in my stomach’ or ‘I hate to do this and I am forced to’ – ‘Relax, its not your fault’ says Witkins. Stress is build not from home but slow and gradual creeping in kids and adults with the changing time. Parent or kids, all are victims of the developing generation, afterall

Bullying Prevention Handbook – a guide for Parents/Teachers/Counsellors - John H. Hoover / Ronald Oliver

The Bullying Prevention Handbook contains a great deal of information recommended especially for Bullying students. The style of writing is clear and easy to read. Though there is no index, the table of contents is very clear, and the book is well laid out. The three main topics presented are: the characteristics of a bully, individual and group interventions at home and at school, and a specific anti-bullying education program. The authors provide references, an extensive bibliography, and many appendices containing multiple evaluation checklists and screening forms.

Though this book is billed in its subtitle as "a guide for principals, teachers and counselors," it is highly recommended to parents, as well. It is frequently only through the intervention of concerned, informed parents that excellent violence-prevention programs such as the one outlined in this book are implemented. Preventing violence in the schools is not a simple, overnight process. It requires the commitment and cooperation of the school staff, parents and the community at large. The effective teaching and counseling models include:

dollbarbie2.gif (557 bytes) A comprehensive step by step Bullying Intervention model

dollbarbie2.gif (557 bytes) Specific strategies for handy solutions to teachers, counselors, parents who can use with Bullies and their scapegoats

dollbarbie2.gif (557 bytes) Evaluation and assessment tools

dollbarbie2.gif (557 bytes) Suggest ways to improve the situations

The Book is a product of US National Educational Service, whose stated goal is to offer resources that have been tested and proven helpful in creating safe environments for young people. In addition to creating safe schools, their areas of expertise include working in culturally diverse environments, containing crises, anger management, building life skills in young people, handling the threat of youth suicide, and discipline with dignity.
