TINTIN -
75 Years old!
Tintin marked
his 75th Birthday on January 10. The creation of Belgian author Herge
(Georges Remi), Tintin is one of the most recognised and best loved comic
characters alongwith a supporting cast led by his faithful dog 'Snowy'.
Tintin is the ageless boy reporter all over the world in his comic
adventures and generated a legion of fans in dozens of languages. He first
appeared in print on January 10, 1929 in a comic supplement to the Brussels
newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle. 'Tintin in the Land of the Soviets' adventure
was followed by 23 other albums and the books have been translated into more
than 60 languages, sold over 200 million copies worldwide. From his debut
exposing Soviet propaganda, he went on to be present at the Japanese
invasion of China, to get embroiled in a gulf oil crisis and even to voyage
to the moon 15 years before the Apollo landings. Along the way, the boy with
the cowlick hair, helped by Snowy, Captain Haddock and eccentric Professor
Calculus, battles drug runners, mad scientis, spies, Latin American
Guerrillas and so on. His famous books and kidsfreesouls most favourites are
: The Blue Lotus, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin in America, The
Secret of Unicorn, Cigars of the Pharaoh, The Black Island, The Shooting

Angeles and set up his first studio in a Garage struggling for a living.
Mickey Mouse was the first cartoon that he drew which proved to be ideal for
animation. Walt Disney was bound to leap with success as his Cartoon
"Flowers and Trees" in 1932 was released, the first film in full
Technicolour. He then produced Cartoon series "Silly symphonies" and later
added characters like Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto. By 1937, Walt Disney
made full length animated films like Snow white, Pinocchio (1940), Fantasia
(1940), Dumbo (1941), Bambi (1942), Cinderella (1950), Alice in Wonderland
(1951), Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955) and the most loved
popular "The Jungle Book" (1967). Treasure Island, Robinhood and Mary
Poppins were his other releases. However, The Jungle Book was released after
his Death. Peter Pan CD Rom of EA Kids by Creative Labs with its animation

through the stories, painting and offering their help to Peter. Walt Disney
hosted weekly Television shows that presented Disney films. Walt Disney
World, theme park resembling Disneyland opened near Orlando, Florida in
1971. A permanent world Fair was also opened by the name EPCOT meaning
Experimental prototype community of tomorrow, emphasizing displays of future
technology. In 1983, Disneyland opened in Tokyo with Japanese Sponsorers
with galores of attraction. During the World war in 1939-1945, Disney’s
studio made Educational films for the US Govt. True Life Adventure and
Living Deserts were his two animated films on animals on how they live in
nature and featured rare animals on earth. Millions of People visit
Disneyland every year to dive and plunge into sheer joy of thrills, rides
and adventure, journeying through the Fantasy world of Disney Productions of
Cartoon characters.

Mickey Mouse was created in 1928 by Walt Disney. The Walt Disney
Company celebrates his birth as November 18, 1928 upon the release of
Steamboat Willie.

CARICATURE
Caricature is an art that is drawn by artists to show the
exaggerated or distorted physical features or pecularities of a
person or object. Fun of the subjects are made with the drawings.
Many caricatures ridicule famous persons to make it appear humorous.
Groups can also be caricatured to expose fun.
Caricature is an Italian word which means making larger or
exaggerate. The first caricatures appeared in Europe in 1500’s.
Either the Protestians or Roman Catholic side were drawn during the
religious revolution called Reformation. By 1700’s, British produced
number of outstanding Caricatures. George Cruikshank, James Gilfray
and Thomas Rowlandson became famous for making Caricatures of
Politicians. Karl Marx was caricatured with his beard made very big
whereas the Hat of Napolean was caricatured funnily and a Cigar
highlighted while caricaturing Winston Churchil to show humour.
Leonardo da Vinci became famous for his Caricatures. The trend of
caricaturing continued since time long and they have also appeared
as Political Cartoons in many Newspapers and magazines. R.K. Laxman,
the famous Cartoonist portrays Political Caricatures to make the
message through. In the United States, most of the Caricatures have
appeared as Political cartoons in Newspapers. Thus, many Cartoonist
use the form of Caricature in Editorial Cartoons changing the
physical characteristics or expressions commenting on current or
important event.
CARTOONS - THE
FANTASY FUN CHARACTERS
Series of Drawings called Panels that tells a story or expresses a
message are called Cartoons. They entertain, teach or comment about
a person, event or a story. Some Cartoons are drawings alone which
gives a message whereas some Cartoons are drawings with words.
Mostly, Cartoons are not drawn as they appear in real life but the
artists use fewer details and may change some features of a
character such as head, hands or feet. The readers attention is
directed to important facial expression such as smile, raised eye
brows, etc. Action details are shown with body parts. Cartoonists
use different highlights like a bulb above the character’s head to
indicate bright idea, use of words from all sides to give impact on
the person’s situation, dark cloud over the head to show despair and
so on. Cartoon messages communicate quickly and effectively in a
glance. Cartoonist works in the field of commercial art to produce
Cartoons for publications. There are various types of Cartoons like
Editorial Cartoons, Comic strips, panels and comic books, magazines,
illustrative and advertising and Animation. A cartoonist has to
visualize an idea and than produce a finished drawing. Facial
Expressions tells a reader how a cartoon character feels like happy,
sad, worried, crafty. serious, dizzy, angry, frightened etc. Broken
lines indicate jumping frogs or the use of lines of different sizes
like long, thin, trailing shows speed of a running horse. Words like
snif, snif near a dog represent smell and ah and ooh exclamations
are often used for surprise. Cartoonists take 30 minutes to a day to
create a cartoon. Adventure, Comic strip Cartoonist use a detailed
style. Cartoons are first drawn using a pencil and than after adding
the background, applies ink over the pencil lines. Textures and
tones are added to clothes, objects and finally, unwanted pencil
marks are erased. Making a Cartoon also requires a person to be
humorous, alert and a keen observer. Necessarily, a Cartoonist need
not be an Artist but the feeling comes from within, just an idea and
