Environment Column : Earth Talk Question
& Answers
What are the environmental implications of all the food we throw away
here in the United States? - Mike Schiller,
Cambridge, MA
"According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Loss Project,
Americans throw away more than 25 percent - some 25.9 million tons -
of all the food we produce for domestic sale and consumption."
A fisherman friend of mine told me that trout populations in the
Interior West of the U.S. are already shrinking due to global warming.
Is this true? And what is the long term prognosis for the trout? -
Jon Klein,
Portsmouth, NH
"Throughout America’s Rocky Mountain West, rivers and streams are
getting hotter and drier, presenting new challenges for trout already
struggling with road building, habitat fragmentation, pollution and
other man-made disturbances. Pictured: A brook trout swims in a native
stream."

Charles
John Huffham Dickens, the famous Novelist was born on 7 February. It
might surprise some that he was a Journalist. Charles became a
reporter on the Parliamentary newspaper 'True Sun', where his
natural talent for reporting and keen observation was first
recognized. He taught himself shorthand and, on the Mirror of
Parliament, and then the Morning Chronicle, he was soon
acknowledged as the best Parliamentary Reporter of the age. Later, he
started a daily Newspaper, the 'Daily News' and a weekly Magazine,
Household Words.

Food waste is a huge issue in
America, especially in light of the growing divide between the
profligate rich and the hungry poor. According to the U.S. Department
of Agriculture’s Food Loss Project, we throw away more than 25
percent—some 25.9 million tons—of all the food we produce for domestic
sale and consumption.

PREVENTING
SUICIDE IN CHILDREN
In the last two weeks, the city of Mumbai has been witness
to an exceptionally high number of suicides in children and
teenagers, with the youngest child being only eleven years
old. As the governments mulls over how to prevent this
catastrophe, and as child specialists, psychiatrists,
psychologists, social workers, parents and teachers put
their collective heads together to find adequate reasons and
ways to prevent suicides, I would like to discuss this
phenomenon in children.
