Ever thought of Vodka – the smooth, clear and it hits the spot!  Chill at a friend’s place or at a bar with the combination of Vodka with an Apple juice, the perfect noon after Lunch with the get together of few friends gossip session.  Just the fact that it has no characteristic smell or taste makes Vodka the perfect drink to create cocktails with. Some flavours of  Vodka like Absolut’s Citron and Vanilla, combination of Vodka-Cranberry, Vodka- Red Bull, Vodka -apple Juice are great to relish or the  Finlandia’s raspberry on the rocks (over ice cubes).

For a 15th century drink that was initially made from potatoes and written off as a good way to get tipsy and keep warm in the cold Eastern European winters. In the last few years, Vodka’s made quite an impression on the bar scene. Think of competition and there’s the whiskey, wine or the robust rum that has a strong taste and definite ‘feel’ on the tongue. There’s also gin but there’s this Vodka, setting pace slowly into the market which is carefully distilled (from cereals like rye, oats or barley) to rid it of any possible flavours.

The luxury Vodkas are not only priced high but are also known as elite drinks. Like the Grey Goose, the lexus of Vodkas, is made from 100% fine French wheat, distilled in a five step process in the cognac region of western France and combined with pure spring water that has been naturally filtered through champagne limestone. A premium brand Ciroc is being lauded as the Champagne of the Vodka, pressed and cold fermented from french grapes, its a five time distilled drink that, puritans would insist resembles wine more and they go smoother with great taste.

The trend of drinking alcohol and partying is drying out, there is revival of interest in the Vodka cocktails – no flavour, no aroma, no color and yet the choice of the new generation of alcohol drinkers. What I feel is Vodka soothes a slow sip, creates a style, makes an impression and especially Vodka with lime or apple juice, is a perfect combination that keeps the live feeling. However, Vodka is a pleasure of life, but it can also be considered a dangerous sport if overdone. Usual drinking party should involve a lot of eating between shooters of vodka. For a hangover, go for the medication handy for your hangover: pickle juice or butter milk.

Altogether, Vodka is a neutral spirit “without distinctive character, aroma, taste or colour”. The truth is, you can make vodka from pretty much anything: grain, potatoes, beetroot or grapes. It is not even that difficult to make. Due to aroma, taste and color, most of Indians drink as cocktail mixed with lime, mint or call it Mojito. It is a national pastime in Finland because families would make their own vodka at home. When it comes to vodka consumption, there are two entirely different traditions. In Eastern European tradition (Russia, Poland etc.) Vodka has long been the national drink.  In these countries, vodka is usually drunk neat from shot glasses. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages and persists to this day.

I hear the UB Group, Vijay Mallya is all set to launch flavoured Vodkas in India with the lime, strawberry and chocolate flavours. They already have the green apple and fashion fruit variants.

Trends be changing and new generation have started gearing towards the Style Check – Drinks with dinner! A few sites below has the brands and combinations with Bartendar’s advice tips.
