World’s first’ online poetry community for youth debuts; inspired by famed Bronx poetry writing class

University Heights High poets take to website

Young poets now have a way to share their work with each other online.

PowerPoetry.org  is a new virtual community by the creators of Power Writers, the celebrated University Heights High School poetry class that spawned the award-winning documentary, To Be Heard.  

“This (website) is about creating an online family where kids feel supported,” said Roland Legiardi-Laura, who co-directed the documentary film about three Bronx teens who used poetry to change their lives.

The inspiration for the online poetry community came three years ago when Legiardi-Laura noticed that students in the Power Writers class were abandoning their leather journals in favor of their cellphones.
